Powers, Lynn A.
"Whatever Happened to the Graffiti art Movement?” Journal of Popular
Culture 29.4 (1996): 137-142. Database. This article explores the
potential reasons why graffiti developed, how it emerged in the art community
and the reaction it received from different sectors of New York City. Powers
mentions the shift in aim and motivation of graffiti writers over time and
argues whether or not this shift is negative or positive. She places admiration
on graffiti as a subculture, how it benefited the lives of many people, its
gradual lost of popularity and eventually disappearance due to the change in society's
expectations.
